RAIKU PACKAGING : Biofam Protective Packaging
When wood gains volume to rethink protective packaging
RAIKU has developed a 100% natural, chemical-free production process designed to replace paper- or plastic-based protective solutions such as bubble wrap. Already commercialised with more than 100 customers across Europe, the material is used to protect glass, ceramics, fragile electronics and other products requiring enhanced protection.
A 100% wood mono-material
The material developed by RAIKU is made exclusively from wood and makes use of existing resources: residues from the wood industry and wood resources that would otherwise have been burned for energy production. One cubic metre of wood can be transformed into up to 20 cubic metres of protective material.
This increase in volume enables RAIKU to reduce the amount of wood required to produce its packaging solutions.
A resource-efficient production process
The process life cycle assessment, verified by the Fraunhofer Institute, compares its production with that of paper.
According to the analysis, the process uses:
- 90% less wood;
- more than 95% less energy;
- 99.9% less water;
- no chemicals.
Production time is also significantly reduced: around 15 seconds, compared with the 10 hours indicated for paper production.
Protection and design
The material is designed to combine product protection with aesthetic appeal. RAIKU uses it in particular for shipping glassware, ceramics and fragile electronic equipment.
The solution has also received several nominations and awards for design and packaging, including Design of the Year, LUXE PACK and the Milan Avant-Garde Packaging Awards.
Modular production
RAIKU has developed a supply chain based on regional suppliers of wood residues.
Its production technology is modular: a machine can be installed in a space of around 50 m², close to or directly at the customer’s site, without the need to build a large-scale factory.
The technology can also be integrated into existing production lines.
A technology entering its scale-up phase
After five years of development, RAIKU is now in a scale-up phase, with a reported technology readiness level ranging from TRL 7 to TRL 9.
The company works with more than 100 customers across Europe, including LVMH and L’Oréal, and is currently continuing to expand its production capacity.
RAIKU is also supported by the European Commission and has been awarded the STEP Seal, which identifies strategic technologies for Europe.
A natural end of life
Made from 100% natural material, the solution is designed to compost within a few weeks. RAIKU also states that it is compatible with requirements related to the PPWR and the EUDR.
