AMCOR : Greyparrot AI analytics
AI supporting polypropylene recycling
At its Leamington Spa site, Amcor uses Greyparrot’s AI-powered analytics technology to improve the sorting of household polypropylene waste and its conversion into recycled resin.
Combined with Amcor’s CleanStream® recycling technology, the solution helps identify, measure and optimise the recovery of white and natural polypropylene from the earliest stages of the sorting process.
From monitoring to real-time optimisation
The collaboration between Amcor and Greyparrot began in 2024 with the installation of four AI-powered analysers.
These units made it possible to independently assess sorting performance and monitor material flows at different points throughout the process.
In 2025, analysis of the data collected led Amcor and Greyparrot to expand the system from four to eight analysers, covering the entire sorting process.
The system now provides real-time information on processed volumes, yields and quality indicators. Operators can therefore measure performance at each stage, adapt sorting programmes and adjust operating parameters based on objective data.
Better identification of recoverable materials
The process is designed in particular to reduce the loss of post-consumer polypropylene into lower-value applications.
By analysing material flows, Amcor can more accurately track the presence of white and natural polypropylene and optimise its recovery to produce recycled resins for demanding applications.
The site produces, among other materials, FDA-approved recycled white pellets as well as mixed-colour pellets marketed under the name “Jazz”.
Data used across the value chain
Data generated by the analysers is used by the site’s operational teams to monitor contamination levels, identify potential process bottlenecks and fine-tune sorting performance on a daily basis.
It also allows Amcor to provide suppliers with objective information about the quality of incoming materials.
This visibility gives upstream partners the opportunity to improve their material streams before they reach the Leamington Spa site.
Measurable results across polypropylene streams
According to Amcor, data-driven feedback provided to suppliers has increased the proportion of polypropylene available in incoming material streams by 0.6% compared with the same period the previous year.
Over the course of a year, this increase represents more than 200 additional tonnes of polypropylene available for processing.
Real-time monitoring and process optimisation have also contributed to a 2.4% increase in the yield of FDA-approved material compared with the same period in 2025. Since the beginning of 2026, Amcor reports that this has generated more than 300 additional tonnes of FDA-approved recycled material.
Anticipating contamination
The system can also detect high levels of film contamination before materials enter the mechanical sorting equipment.
Identifying this contamination upstream helps reduce the risk of blockages and improve the overall stability of the sorting process.
A system integrated into existing infrastructure
The deployment at Leamington Spa is based on adding a layer of digital analytics to the site’s existing sorting infrastructure.
As the site moves towards full production capacity in 2026, Amcor plans to use this increased visibility to maximise the production of FDA-approved recycled resin and keep more polypropylene in higher-value applications.
The approach could also be applied to other recycling facilities and used to develop customer-specific analytics, as well as services related to circularity, recycled-content traceability and design for recycling.
