The beauty of composites

FaiveleyTech has launched The Marble, a marble-effect cap made from Sulapac, to prove that luxury products can be made from bio-sourced materials without the need for finishes. The marbled appearance is created using bi-injection with two different colorants—also bio-sourced—that are added to the material. The technical challenge was to respect the shape of the cap, a massive sphere with taut surfaces. Because the piece is rather thick, it produces a sound when tapped, a feature appreciated in high-end packaging.

mPackting has developed mBlack, a bio-composite that can be molded like a petroleum-based thermoplastic, but is said to break down without creating pollution in six months or more, if left outside or processed through industrial composting.
