Closures and stoppers: new solutions in plastic, metal and wood
Suppliers are pulling out the stops in the closures market with different materials addressing a variety of needs. We shortlist recent offerings in the areas of plastics, metal and wood.
Plastics: beauty on the path to eco-design
Currently, the plastics used in packaging that can be recycled on an industrial scale include polyethylene, PET, and polypropylene. In the USA, Albéa has launched a range of monomaterial capsules in high-density polyethylene specially designed to be recycled, especially when combined with its Greenleaf all-plastic laminate tube, created a few years ago as an alternative to tubes laminated with aluminum. Surlyn (Dow), which has become a popular choice in the beauty sector over the last few decades, does not currently have a post-consumer recycling channel.
Coverpla, however, has decided to recycle its own Surlyn industrial offcuts to make the Marilyn cap, composed entirely of this material. Since the beads obtained during recycling are not all the same size, this “home-made” recycled product may present small white or dark spots after injection, imperfections which may be tolerated by certain brands and consumers. Eco-design also involves simplifying and lightening plastic products.
At Mugler’s request, Aptar Beauty reworked the spray cap for the Alien fragrance, reducing the number of components from five to four and replacing the original Surlyn on a transparent colored part with a lighter copolyester. The result: a simplified production process and less complex logistics flows in terms of storage and shipping. The emergence of refillable cosmetics also has an impact on closure systems
