SWISSPACK COMPANY LIMITED ROLLED WOOD

SWISSPACK COMPANY LIMITED ROLLED WOOD
Rolled wood is a true eco-responsible innovation that makes it possible to produce luxury packaging as well as displays or accessories. The embodied energy required for its production is extremely low: 30 times lower than that required for MDF, 100 times lower than for paper, and 1000 times lower than for plastic!

This technology represents a true alternative to plastic or cardboard for rigid cases. It is an additive technique: very thin layers of wood are rolled one over the other. It generates very little waste. The products obtained in this way are extremely lightweight while being very robust.

All types of wood can be used for a natural aesthetic finish, or, why not, colored with solvent-free dyes. The possibilities for the finishing layer are numerous: walnut, oak, maple, bamboo, or even other finishing layers such as carbon fiber or lacquer, for example. The finish can be natural (polished wood) or natural oils can be used for an ecological shine.
The investment required for development is very low because even the molds are made of wood. As a result, the MOQ is very low (50 pieces). The products are reusable or compostable.

Finally, the life cycle analysis (LCA) carried out on a watch case proves that, with an equivalent MDF structure, a rolled wood case emits 3.5 times less Greenhouse Gases (GHG)! And out of the 16 government-defined impacts under the European PEF standard, 12 out of 16 impacts are lower for the rolled wood case!

DESIGN

Rolled wood is eco-designed from the outset to limit its environmental impact. It is an original and unprecedented innovation in the world of luxury. The perceived value of the product is high, and the quality meets the standards of the luxury industry. The technique developed makes it possible to create original rounded shapes that were previously impossible to achieve in wood, without using machining techniques (which generate significant waste). Its applications in packaging are numerous: cases for watches, jewelry, perfumes, displays, or any other objects or gifts such as cigar cases, card holders, tea boxes, trays, storage boxes, etc.

In addition, each object can be personalized by adding a logo. Giving the product a second life is easy, both through its design and its conception.

REDUCTION MATERIALS

Rolled wood was designed with the primary objective of using a natural material, wood, and of using as little material as possible. It is therefore a mono-material design to which only a solvent-free glue is added. The products thus created are very lightweight. They are fully compostable or, of course, reusable with a different function: for example, a case can become a tray. Its climate impact is very low: the LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) has shown that a rolled wood case emits 3.5 times less Greenhouse Gases (GHG) than a conventional MDF case of equivalent structure. Manufacturing requires very little energy and is absolutely non-polluting. As for transport, since the weight of the product is reduced to a minimum, it is optimized.

PROCESS OF PRODUCTION

The production of rolled wood consumes no resources other than the wood, which must obligatorily come with a traceability certificate. The trunks are cut into thin sheets without saw blade marks or energy-intensive planing. The wood is simply cut and dried before use. It is not machined to make the product but built layer by layer (additive technique). During production, practically no waste is generated. And if waste does occur, it will be recyclable. All the material is used from cutting to the final product!

SUPPLY CHAIN

Rolled wood products, being ultra-light, naturally reduce the carbon footprint related to transport. Logistics favor ship, train, or truck—means of transport with a lower environmental impact.

MARKET ADAPTABILITY

As the rolled wood technique is already developed, it is immediately available. It meets a strong market demand for truly eco-responsible solutions in high-end packaging. Its perceived value, given its reception at Luxe Pack Paris, is very high. Its quality / cost / environmental performance ratio makes it the all-round champion in luxury packaging!

END OF LIFE

From its design, the end of life of a rolled wood product is thought through in detail, thereby reducing its carbon footprint. Mainly because the product will be easily recyclable and biodegradable. The wood recycling stream will thus produce new material or energy.
